Sema Alzubaidi

Sema Alzubaidi is a pharmacist and PhD student at the University of Nottingham, with a strong interdisciplinary background in pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, and chemical biology. She obtained her pharmacy degree in 2023 from the University of Vienna, where she developed a solid foundation in pharmacology and drug design.

Her current research is conducted within the group of Dr. Shailesh Mistry at the Biodiscovery Institute in Nottingham. Her work focuses on the design and synthesis of fluorescent antagonists targeting angiotensin receptors, a class of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). She uses computational tools, including PyMOL and Maestro, alongside structure activity relationship (SAR) analysis to guide ligand design and synthetic strategy.

Following synthesis, she evaluates the compounds pharmacologically, primarily using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET)-based approaches to study ligand–receptor interactions and signalling.

Her research aims to develop chemical tools for use in endogenous systems to better understand G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) pharmacology and their therapeutic potential.
