Salsabeel Shaalan

Salsabeel Shaalan is a pharmacist and PhD student in Molecular Pharmacology and Drug Discovery at the University of Nottingham. She began her career as a practicing pharmacist, gaining experience in patient care under challenging healthcare conditions.

She was awarded the Chevening Scholarship to pursue an MSc in Drug Discovery at the University of Nottingham, where she undertook research in the Cell Signalling Research Group under the supervision of Professor Stephen J. Hill and Dr Laura Kilpatrick, focusing on GPCRs. She later worked as a researcher at Durham University in collaboration with AstraZeneca on the biochemical and biophysical characterisation of ATP-dependent DNA helicases within an oncology discovery programme.

In 2024, she began her PhD under the supervision of Professor Jeanette Woolard, supported by the Wellcome Trust. Her current research focuses on adenosine receptor subtypes A2A and A2B, key GPCRs involved in inflammation, cardiovascular regulation, and immune responses. She is particularly interested in developing fluorescent ligands with improved photophysical properties to enable high-resolution imaging of receptor expression, localisation, and signalling in living cells at endogenous levels. Her work aims to apply these tools to better understand adenosine receptor signalling in pulmonary arterial hypertension, investigating their role in disease mechanisms and vascular dysfunction to support the development of more effective therapeutic strategies.
